Maybe you’re a racing driver looking to take that step up, improve your race craft or get more confident in front of the media. Or perhaps you’re looking for a career change to get into the exciting world of motorsport. Or, maybe, you already run a motorsport business but need to focus on growth. Whatever your situation, there’s a chance that a coach could help but before you dive headfirst into a £££ coaching program, ask yourself these questions.
Have I done as much as I can alone?
Before you start throwing your money at a problem, have you come as far as you can on your own? If there’s still more you could be doing to move yourself towards your goal, maybe it’s not quite time for a coach.
A coach is an advisor with specific skills and expertise that can see the bigger picture and help you move in the direction you want to go. Coaches are for the stuck and frustrated who know they have untapped potential.
Am I willing to work hard to take a coach’s advice on board?
A coach will help you find your path but you’re the one that has to make the changes to reach your goals. If you’re shy of hard work, perhaps a coach isn’t for you.
Why do I want a coach?
You really need to consider why you want a coach. If it’s because you need a quick fix then you might be disappointed but if you’re ready for real changes in your racing career or professional life that have long and short term results, now might be the time to get a coach.
What has this coach done?
Look at a coach’s experience, history and client list. Not all coaches will have expertise in the areas you need and they’ll still be able to lead you towards your goals. However, if you’re looking for real advice, as well as an advisor, a coach with experience in the areas you want to improve can’t hurt.
Do I trust them?
You’ll know whether or not you trust a coach’s expertise, especially if you regularly read their content and interact with them on social media. If you’re wary of a coach, it’s likely you’ll want to spend money with them but ask yourself the question about trust, it’s important.
What do others have to say about this coach?
Look for testimonials, comments on articles, social proof and recommendations. If your peers are getting results from a coach, it’s likely you will too.
Am I willing to be made accountable?
One of the best things about having a coach is that you are suddenly accountable to someone. A coach will make sure you’re hitting targets, contacting sponsors and moving towards your goals.
What do I want to achieve?
You need to have a main goal in sight. At this stage, it doesn’t necessarily have to be measurable or specific but you need to know what you want to achieve in the long and short term. In knowing this, a coach can help you define that goal and make plans to move towards it.
A coach might not be for everyone but for those that do take on a coach tend to go further. With someone looking in at your career, you’re able to see the bigger picture, be held accountable when it comes to your goals and have an expert on hand to advise you as you progress.
